Während sich die meisten alternativen Politiken und Strategien verständlicherweise auf den Klimanotstand konzentrieren, gibt es kaum Bewusstsein für die wahrscheinlichen Auswirkungen des kommenden  Kampfes um den nationalen und individuellen "ökologischen Fußabdruck". Doch die Forderungen nach einer raschen Verringerung der Emissionen sind für sich genommen unzureichend, denn: Wie werden sich Veränderungen bei den materiellen Ressourcen auf die Beschäftigung, die Nahrungsmittelproduktion, den Handel, die Steuerpolitik, den sozialen Wohlstand und andere wichtige Bereiche auswirken?

Dekarbonisierungsstrategien verändern bereits jetzt die politische und sozio-ökonomische Ausrichtung sowohl demokratischer als auch antidemokratischer Parteien und Bewegungen quer durch das politische Spektrum. In diesem Vortrag werden einige der wichtigsten vernachlässigten Themen untersucht, mit denen sich die Gegner eines nicht nachhaltigen Kapitalismus auseinandersetzen müssen, wenn die entstehende Post-Carbon-Gesellschaft nicht weiterhin von den Marktkräften getrieben sein soll.

Professor Boris Frankel ist Sozialtheoretiker, politischer Wirtschaftswissenschaftler und Kulturkritiker. Er ist Honorary Principal Fellow des Melbourne Sustainable Society Institute an der Universität von Melbourne. Er lehrt an Universitäten in Australien, Europa und Nordamerika, ist Medienkommentator und Autor zahlreicher Veröffentlichungen. Sein Werk wurde in viele Sprachen übersetzt und in Europa, den USA, Lateinamerika, China und Südkorea veröffentlicht. Frankel hat zudem eine Trilogie über die politische Ökonomie der Umweltkrise verfasst: Fictions of Sustainability: The Politics of Growth and Post-Capitalist Futures (2018), Capitalism Versus Democracy? Rethinking Politics in the Age of Environmental Crisis (2020) and Democracy Versus Sustainability: Inequality, Material Footprints and Post-Carbon Futures (2021).

While most alternative policies and strategies understandably focus on the climate emergency, there is still widespread lack of awareness about the likely impact of the coming critical struggle over national and individual material footprints. Familiar calls for rapid emissions reductions are inadequate on their own. Yet, how will changes to material resources affect employment, food production, trade, fiscal policies, social welfare, and other critical policy areas?

Decarbonisation strategies are already altering political and socio-economic alignments of both democratic and anti-democratic parties and movements across the political spectrum. This talk will examine some of the key neglected issues that will need to be confronted by opponents of unsustainable capitalism if emerging post-carbon societies are not to be largely shaped by market forces. 

Professor Boris Frankel is a social theorist, political economist, and cultural critic. He is Honorary Principal Fellow in the Melbourne Sustainable Society Institute at the University of Melbourne. Apart from extensive teaching and research experience in universities in Australia, Europe and North America, he has been a regular media commentator and author of numerous publications. His work has been translated into many languages with editions in Europe, the US, Latin America, China, and South Korea. Boris Frankel’s trilogy of books on the political economy of the environmental crisis are: Fictions of Sustainability: The Politics of Growth and Post-Capitalist Futures (2018), Capitalism Versus Democracy? Rethinking Politics in the Age of Environmental Crisis (2020) and Democracy Versus Sustainability: Inequality, Material Footprints and Post-Carbon Futures (2021).
